History
Tustin is a city in Orange County, California. The population was 80,102 at the 2010 census. Tustin is located next to the Santa Ana River and Tustin Foothills.
Tustin is bordered by the cities of Santa Ana, Irvine, and North Tustin. The Tustin Historical Society operates the Tustin Area Museum out of the Old Tustin City Hall building on Main Street.
The city’s name is derived from Cornelius Tusten, who laid out the city in 1868 along with Columbus Tusten. The city was incorporated in 1927 with 1,028 residents signing up as founding citizens.
During World War II, a Navy anti-submarine airship base, Naval Auxiliary Air Station Tustin, was established in 1942. The population increased dramatically after this, with housing developments being built to accommodate the influx of people.
In the 1980s, Tustin became known as “The Little City of the Orange Groves” because of the many orange groves that once covered the area. However, by the early 1990s, almost all of these groves had been replaced by residential development.
